Montana Rebrand
In this project, I was given the opportunity to select a state or city to brand or rebrand. I chose to rebrand the state of Montana, focusing on the development of a new state seal, flag, and logo. Each color and design element within the state seal, flag, and logo is thoughtfully connected to the core ideologies and identity of Montana.
Logo
The logo features a grizzly bear claw, symbolizing Montana’s state animal, as a central element. Within the palm of the claw, a mountain design is incorporated to represent the state's rugged and mountainous terrain. This combination not only highlights Montana’s natural wildlife but also reflects the prominent geographical features that define the state’s identity and character.
Branding
Using icons and imagery inspired by popular animals native to the areas surrounding Montana, these patterns and business cards are designed to capture the spirit of the state and reflect its rich connection to wildlife.
Seal
The intent behind the seal was to maintain a strong visual relationship with the logo while introducing additional design elements to create a more intricate and refined composition. These added details were carefully selected to deepen the narrative and strengthen the visual identity without losing the essence of Montana. A stream was incorporated to represent the state's vast network of valleys, emphasizing Montana’s diverse and expansive landscapes. The Bitterroot flower, Montana’s state flower, was also integrated into the design to provide a natural balance around the typography and to further ground the seal in the state's unique heritage and environment.
Flag
In vexillology, a flag should never be more complex than necessary; ideally, a kindergartener should be able to draw it with ease. To honor this principle of simplicity while preserving Montana’s strong association with mountainous landscapes, the flag was designed with a clean, geometric composition. It features a stylized mountain and sun, capturing the essence of the state through minimal yet powerful forms.
